UK cracks down on file sharers

Britain’s trade secretary, Lord Mandelson, has ordered the country’s lawmakers to draft new laws that would give internet service providers more power to block file sharers from the internet.

Lord Mandelson’s order comes a few days after he had a dinner together with Hollywood billionaire David Geffen, who is behind companies such as Geffen Records, Geffen Film and Dreamworks, writes the British Times Online.

A new bill in the UK called Digital Britain will be presented to the British Parliament next month. Digital Britain will enable UK ISPs to shut down internet users who engage in illegal file sharing.

According to a spokesperson for Lord Mandelson, there were no discussions about illegal file sharing during the dinner with David Geffen, writes Times Online.
