Seagate confirms 3 terabyte hard drive – released this year

The new hard drive, which will be sold under the Constellation ES series, is planned to be on the market sometime later this year. Seagate has not yet given an exact date for when the hard drive will be available.

Seagate also warns that the hard drive will only work on newer computers that support hard drives larger than 2.1 terabytes. The 2.1 terabyte ceiling was set about 30 years ago when today’s specifications for hard drives were drawn up.

The new hard drive will come in a 3.5-inch format, a Seagate spokeswoman says a 2.5-inch version is also in the plans at a later date.
