How to install a fresh version of Windows 7

Many computers come without a standard Windows 7 disc. Instead, some type of recovery disc is included, alternatively one or more partitions on the hard drive where the operating system is located.

The problem with both variants is that, in addition to Windows 7, it usually also includes a lot of junk programs, such as trial versions of various programs, media players and other totally unnecessary tools. It takes a lot of time to remove all these programs, and it’s still not the same as installing a completely clean version of Windows 7.

Something that really should be emphasized is that we do not recommend erasing your recovery partition or discarding your recovery disc. While this procedure works for the vast majority of people, there are times when it doesn’t work. For example, it may happen that Windows cannot be activated even though you have entered a correct product key, and some computers require the extra software that comes with them to be installed.

Unfortunately, there is no way for you to find out in advance whether the method works or not, all you can do is test yourself. Make sure you have a plan for what to do if something goes wrong.

You should also save your files and drivers to an external storage device before getting started. Reinstalling Windows deletes all personal data and may cause some of the computer’s functions to stop working, at least if there are no built-in drivers. Download the latest drivers and have them available on, for example, a USB stick before reinstalling Windows.

STEP BY STEP: How to create a clean Windows 7 installation

1. Key in the code. Locate the product key for Windows 7. The combined number and letter code is usually found on a label on the PC or on the accompanying paper. You can also retrieve the key with the program Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder.

2. Download the file. Download the iso file for the version of Windows 7 that you own. You will find the web addresses below. The files are completely legal to download. Note that, unfortunately, only Professional and Professional N are available in Swedish versions.

3. The right tools. Download now the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool, a tool from Microsoft that allows you to copy the iso file to a DVD or USB drive. There are also a number of other programs that can do exactly the same thing.

4. Save the file. Start the tool. At Source file you click on Browse and locates the iso file for Windows 7. Then select DVD or USB depending on what you consider most practical. Finish by pressing Begin copying alternatively Begin burning.

5. Boot. Restart the PC and enter the bios/uefi settings by pressing down Delete or the corresponding button at computer startup. Look for a menu called Boot priority (or similar) and make sure the PC starts from DVD or USB. Save the changes.

6. Install. Insert the newly created Windows 7 media and restart the computer. Now the installation process will start as usual – and then just follow the instructions.
