Fujitsu Slim Mobile Express DVB-T: Flexible small TV receiver

Using your laptop as a movie and music player is both simple and practical. But for it to function fully as a media machine, it also needs to be able to display and record digital television and for this a television receiver is needed, which is exactly what the Fujitsu Slim Mobile Express DVB-T is.

The main feature of the Fujitsu Slim Mobile Express DVB-T is its handy size. Unlike many other TV receivers, it is not connected via USB, but instead inserted into a free Expresscard slot (34 mm or 54 mm with adapter). Once in place, it does not stick out of the computer at all, which is of course very convenient. However, it must be connected to an external antenna, so it won’t be completely invisible.

Another feature that distinguishes the Fujitsu Slim Mobile Express DVB-T is that, together with the accompanying software, it allows you to record in the h.264 format, which gives better quality to the recordings of programs broadcast in HD. It is also possible to record in the mpeg-2 format.

Bad reception
So far so good, but unfortunately the Fujitsu Slim Mobile Express DVB-T suffers from the same shortcoming as basically all TV receivers of this type – the reception with the included mobile TV antenna is really too bad. For you to have any chance of getting a decent reception at all, you have to have the antenna in the window, but even that is no guarantee.

Of course, it is possible to connect the usual TV cable to the Fujitsu Slim Mobile Express DVB-T, but then the big point of having a TV receiver in a laptop – the mobility – disappears.

Also worth noting is that Expresscard slots are not very common. A USB-connected TV receiver can basically be used by everyone, but most likely your laptop lacks an Expresscard slot.

The Fujitsu Slim Mobile Express DVB-T does what it should and is clearly one of the better TV receivers on the market. However, check that you really have an Expresscard slot in your laptop before you run out and buy one.
