Facebook has been testing a new version of the service for a few days now, which goes by the name Facebook Lite. According to Facebook, Facebook Lite should offer a simpler version of Facebook similar to the versions available for mobile phones.
The Lite version of Facebook will allow users to update their status, accept new friends and view photographs. The more resource-demanding functions, such as external programs, will be scaled out.
Initially, Facebook invited a large number of users to join and test the new version. However, the pressure became too great and Facebook was forced to shut down the trial version and reduce the number of users allowed to participate in the test.
The company has not stated when Facebook Lite will be available to all users.
