SmartBeam – a smart solution
Smartbeam technology uses six antennas to follow devices connected to the network. In this way, you should get better coverage and better strength of the signal. At a distance of a couple of meters, the speed is 83 megabits per second down and 47 megabits per second up, on basically all file sizes. None of these speeds constitute a record, but may still be considered approved. If we add to that that the speed does not decrease significantly with distance or simpler obstacles, we have to admit that D-Link has succeeded.
The D-Link DIR-645 has a slightly different shape. Instead of the traditional flat, horizontal construction, it is most reminiscent of a pint beer can.
This router has a stpr amount of built-in functions and to name a few: scheduling rules (for example access to the Internet and media library), iTunes server and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance). The device handles ipv6 which makes it future-proof when it comes to the new ip standard.
Overall good, but…
Overall, it’s a very good router for its price range, but there are some downsides. The first obvious thing is that the DIR-645 does not work with dual-band. The device thus only uses the 2.4 gigahertz band. A further minus is that the connection is not always stable. Sometimes it drops dramatically and then rises again. At the same time, this is something that you probably won’t notice during normal use.
The DIR-645 may not be a super device but that is also reflected in the price and the router is a good fit for most homes. It is more for stable connection in difficult environments than for fast. If you intend to use your network to stream high-definition movies or other bandwidth-intensive activities, you should perhaps choose a different device, one with dual band technology. But you can expect to pay at least twice as much.
