Asus presents new gaming laptops with heavy performance

Today, Asus reveals a bunch of new maxed-out laptops in the ROG Strix and ROG Zephyrus series, based on new tenth-generation Intel Core H-class processors, which they also become public today, as well as Nvidia Geforce RTX Super graphics cards.

New hardware naturally gives a noticeable boost in performance. Asus should also have worked extra hard in the new models with the cooling design, among other things with extra diverting so-called liquid metal as cooling paste. And several of the models are configured with extra fast ram memories, ddr4-3200, which they claim to be the first with.

That’s not all that’s new. The new Zephyrus computers have received a new and less pronounced gamer design, with additional color choices and tighter styling. The idea is that they should be able to attract a wider group of users. For example, developers and creative professionals who appreciate the relatively affordable raw power of a gaming laptop, and play on the same computer in their spare time, but who don’t want to bring a neon-flashing spaceship into the customer meeting.

The ROG Zephyrus M15 has perhaps the most stripped-down design of the new computers. However, that doesn’t mean it looks boring.

We’ve actually seen this design before. The Zephyrus G14 with AMD Ryzen 4000 processor and Radeon graphics presented at CES in January has seemingly the same design as the new computers – tighter lines, with fewer protruding details, and a minimized ROG logo and a stylish dot pattern in the screen lid.

Mainly games, but also other things

Asus also invests heavily in both extra fast and extra color-safe screens with a really high minimum level in the entire new range. There are still simpler entry-level configurations with 60 Hz displays, but the majority will be high-frequency models, going all the way up to 300 Hz, with 3 millisecond response times in the sharpest models.

This at the same time as they have ensured Pantone-verified color accuracy and guaranteed low Delta E values. It’s not quite up to par with a true mobile workstation for graphic designers, but good enough for a large number of creators on a limited budget. Several models will also be available with a 4k display at 60 Hz, with Abobe RGB color gamut instead of srgb.

Other interesting things about the computers are that they all support charging via usb-c port, although they also have more powerful separate chargers on the proprietary connector, that they have easily accessible m.2 slots for inserting extra ssd, and that several of they support GPU Switch, a feature that switches from G Sync mode to more power-efficient graphics management when you’re not gaming or running other GPU-intensive programs.

Finally, Asus talks about their new own game store, where they will offer registered users games at discounted prices. It’s not another direct Steam competitor like Origin or the Epic Store, but they will primarily sell codes that can be activated on Steam or on GOG, the same way most local game stores do.

New dual screen computer

Most spectacular new model is called Zephyrus Duo 15, a gaming version of last year’s spectacular dual-screen laptop Zenbook Duo. It has been fitted with the same extended keyboard, a mousepad where the number pad usually sits and an additional 32:9 full-width screen in the space behind. It has 4k resolution on the width, 3,840 x 1,100 pixels, glass surface in front, and touch function.

A novelty here is also that it is mounted on arms that fold up the screen a few centimeters at the rear edge, so that you get a better viewing angle when using it. It also allows for extra air intake to cool the computer. Despite the extra screen and heavy hardware under the shell, it should not be excessively large, it is 2.1 cm thick and weighs 2.4 kilos.

The idea with the screen is that you should be able to have, for example, a chat app, performance and temperature monitoring or streaming software there so that it does not interfere with gaming. Asus says it is working with game developers and publishers so that games can take advantage of the screen. At the time of writing, they can reveal that Dying Light 2 will have support for putting part of the interface in the screen.

The Zephyrus Duo 15 is equipped with the Intel Core i7-10875H or the new top processor Core i9-10980HK, and a Geforce RTX 2070 Super or RTX 2080 Super in MaxQ design. It has 16 GB of RAM as standard, which can be expanded to a maximum of 48 GB. The main 15.6-inch screen is either a 1080p and 300Hz panel or one with 60Hz, 4k and Adobe RGB.

Upgraded tunics with serious style

Three “regular” ROG Zephyrus computers are also coming. Starting with Zephyrus S17 and Zephyrus S15, with slim design under 19 millimeters. Here we also find all the new news around the Zephyrus series, with configurations up to 300 Hz screen, Geforce 2080 Super Max Q, GPU Switch function, fast ram memories and up to Core i9-10980HK processor.

These are supplemented with more pressured prices Zephyrus M15. It has either a 270Hz 1080p display or a 60Hz 4k display. It has a processor up to Core i7, which in generation 10 has received eight cores, just like Core i9, and graphics cards from GeForce GTX 1660 Ti to RTX 2070.

The ROG Zephyros computers are those that, according to Asus, are aimed both at gamers and creative “prosumers”. The other series presented, three new ROG Strix computers, have a more pronounced traditional gamer focus and design.

Playful colors and maximum performance in Strix

It is not least noticeable Strix G15, a model that combines its black brushed metal chassis with a spectacular new bright pink accent color. Asus calls the color “Electro Punk” and it should also be found in a handful of accessories – headset, keyboard, mouse and backpack.

The other new Strix models, Strix G17as well as e-sports adapted Strix Scar 15 and Strix Scar 17, largely retain the shape of previous models, but are here upgraded with new hardware. The Strix G15 and G17 are a bit more simply configured, with up to a Core i7 processor and MaxQ-type RTX 2070 Super graphics. They are available with either 144 Hz or 270 Hz display.

Strix Scar 15 and Scar 17 are a level sharper, with the most maxed-out Core i9 processor and RTX 2080 Super graphics. The 17-incher with RTX 2080 is also not the mobile MaxQ design on the card but a desktop card with extra performance. That model has extra built-in cooling and is slightly thicker. We don’t have any information on its dimensions and weight, but it doesn’t seem to be as extremely large as some towable gaming laptops we’ve seen over the years.

The ROG Zephyrus Duo will arrive in Sweden “early in the third quarter of this year”, Asus announces, that is, probably right after the summer. It has a suggested retail price of SEK 45,999. Exactly when the other computers appear in Sweden, which configurations will be sold here and their prices have not been revealed yet.
